look i am not about to discredit any of the hard work done by amazing people like stacey abrams (LIKE GO BUY HER BOOKS SO SHE CAN KEEP BEING AWESOME WHILE FINANCIALLY SECURE), but unless we are aggressive about reminding people of the work Natives do, no one is going to hear about it.

the trump administrations failures and deliberate efforts of harm have caused a disproportionate amount of harm to Indian Country/Natives living on tribal lands. the losses we’ve seen are incomparable, and the devastation beyond repair. every Elder death due to the failures of trump and co. is another bit of culture, history, and language lost.

you won’t hear much about it because our numbers are small. because of the ongoing genocide of Natives on our own lands. the numbers are small, but the percentages by which we are being harmed are astronomical.

but so is our determination.

we are still here and we will not be silenced or forgotten.

And you know why so many southwest states are in play this year? It’s because Native people got out the vote. All the work that Stacey Abrams did, for which she is justly praised, a whole lotta tribes have been doing too.

I want to give a shout out to Menominee County, which is the bluest county (highest percentage of Democratic votes) in Wisconsin this year, despite being up in the majority-conservative northern part of the state and not having a major urban center like Milwaukee or Madison to help bolster Democratic support. In fact, Menominee has always been Wisconsin’s bluest county in every presidential election since it was formed in 1959.

Menominee County is home to the Menominee Indian Reservation. Most of the people who live in the county are members of the Menominee Nation. Wisconsin had an extremely small margin this election and I, a non-Native person living in Wisconsin, am so grateful to the people of the Menominee Nation for showing up and going SO HARD, this year and every year, in the face of toxic opposition.

Also, I hope this is okay to add on: for years, the Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin has been fighting against the “Back Forty Mine Project,“ a proposed open-pit metallic sulfide mine on the shores of the Menominee River.

They have put together a website, noback40.org, with information about the project (including a handout and a basic fact sheet with lots of great information all in one place) as well as information about how we can help. There is also a long-running, still-open GoFundMe (open since 2017).

In January of this year, the Menominee Tribe lost their appeal demanding the permits for the mine’s construction be reviewed by federal authorities, not the state of Michigan. Per the WPR article: “If permitting for the project rested with federal agencies, they would be required to conduct official consultation with the tribe on the project.”

Despite what Aquila Resources, the owner of the project, have claimed, as of July of this year they do not yet have all required permits to move forward, and have been further set back by Covd-19.

Menominee County and the Menominee people came through and indeed always comes through for Democratic candidates. If you can, maybe take a bit of time today to research this important issue and see if there is anything you can do to help!

40,000 rejected vote by mail ballots in DeKalb County need to be cured by Friday or they will be tossed (mismatch signature, etc.), verify your ballot status. https://mvp.sos.ga.gov

Every vote counts- if we can pull Perdue down below 50%, it goes into a run off in Jan – and that puts a 50/50 split for the Senate in play. A 50/50 split with Kamala Harris as tie breaker could be an amazing thing, guys. 40,000 votes for Ossoff could make the difference.

Said in Mississippi, with a history of hundreds of lynchings. She would go on to win that runoff but just barely. Two years later, they’re running against each other again and Espy is polling extremely competitively. If you live in Mississippi, please vote.

Retaking the Senate is so, so important. If you can, here’s how to donate to Mike Espy.

I know your first impulse is to despair. To say we’re fucked. To feel desperate and hopeless. I feel it. We all feel it.

But Notorious RBG would not have wanted us to lie down and accept defeat.

She’d have wanted us to fight like hell. And that’s what we’re going to do.

Call your house rep: Find them by Zipcode

Script: “Hi, my name is ____ I am one of your constituents. I am calling to ask Congressperson ______ to go on the record saying they will respect Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s dying wishes as well as the precedent set in 2016 to not nominate a new Justice until after a new president is installed. Thanks for your time.”

Call your senator:

(202) 224-3121 Capitol Switchboard
Don’t know who your senator is? Find your senator

Script: “Hi, my name is ________ and I live in (STATE). I am calling to ask Senator ______ to go on the record saying the Senate will not hold hearings on any potential replacement for Justice Ginsburg until after a new president is installed, per Justice Ginsburg’s last wishes and the precedent set in 2016. Thank you for your time.”

*sigh*

I really wish people would learn how our government actually works, because it’s a big part of the problem.

Don’t call your reps. They have nothing to do with SC appointments. The SENATE confirms nominations to the Supreme Court. Also, RBG’s final wish will not be a swaying point for any republican planning on confirming the nominee. It has no legal basis. Precedent, on the other hand, is a tool with which to bargain. Mitch McConnell set the precedent in 2016. It should be followed.

Do call your Senators, but not through the Capitol switchboard. The staff there is not responsible for speaking with constituents and your calls will fall on deaf ears (if you can get transferred to their office at all). Call their local offices. Their numbers should be easily accessible. E-mails are also good. Also contact their campaign offices (which should be separate from their established Congrssional offices within the state, but aren’t always) if they are running for re-election. And make sure you are calling YOUR senator, and not someone else’s. Also, make sure you use your own words, not a script, and do what you can to call during business hours and speak to a person. Voicemails do not always get listened to. The point of calling is to fill the time of the people working in the offices and bug the bejezuss out of them. Call during regular business hours.

Phone calls will also be much more effective once a nominee has been named. Then you will have concrete reasons why you want them to oppose the confirmation, as opposed to just not wanting a conservative judge confirmed.

Yo Biden just announced an infrastructure devolopment/clean energy/environmental justice plan and it’s honesty pretty fucking amazing and much more ambitious than I ever would have expected from him, goddamn. He’s trying to Eisenhower/New Deal our way out of the economic collapse.

Some notable points addressed by this plan:

  • Expanding American railway systems
  • Fixing the crumbling roads, bridges, dams, etc. that haven’t been kept up
  • Capping abandoned oil wells
  • Undoing Trump’s financial bailout policies for unclean energy companies
  • Reinvesting in American-made automotive companies
  • Getting America to 100% clean energy by 2035
  • Fixing air, water, and ground pollution issues that disproportionately affect poc
  • Getting justice for victims of environmental racism
  • Reinstating a bunch of environmental and medical jobs Trump had cut
  • Getting the US back on the Paris Agreement/Climate Accord

For those who were wondering what the point of voting for a leftist candidate was, if the leftist didn’t win—this is it.  Biden is trending leftward.  That’s what we want him to do.  He wouldn’t be doing it if the left hadn’t shown itself to be a real force.

I know that the work is never done and all that, but I think we can count this one as a win.

please god vote. register ASAP. check to make sure you’re still registered because they’re kicking people off. look into your states mail in ballot laws

I don’t like the guy, and I doubt if most of this would actually get done, but please, it’s better than the guy actively dismantling anything good we have and pushing us backwards

even if you’re in a state that swings dem and you think your vote doesn’t matter, it does. the popular vote tally means something even if the system is broken. Hillary got millions more votes and that was the voice of the people. vote even just to add to the tally of people against Trump because you know the numbers will hurt his vanity

And for all the “lesser of two evils” people out there who think a Biden victory means rewarding the Democratic party’s ongoing rejection of the left wing of the party, reminder that the alternative, GREATER of two evils, is THIS:

A new policy change to prevent trans women from accessing homeless shelters is teaching people how to police gender presentation and physical features just so the country can legalize a new way to get away with killing us.

This is the shit we would have four more years of if Biden loses.

Shelter workers may use “factors such as height, the presence (but not the absence) of facial hair, the presence of an Adam’s apple, and other physical characteristics which, when considered together, are indicative of a person’s biological sex,” the rule says.

If a homeless person appears too transgender for a homeless shelter, the shelter is allowed to ask them for proof of “biological sex.”

Biden wasn’t even my fifth choice in the primaries.  But we have to focus on the general now.  There are only two possible outcomes this November.  We’ve seen how one of them turned out for us, and we all know damn well it’s only getting worse, and getting worse faster.  Do not forget that the other outcome is not just about Biden; there’s an entire Democratic platform that comes in with him, along with a complete 180 in White House staff, federal appointments, judicial confirmations, etc.  And the judicial confirmations ALONE are a huge deal.  If you are somehow NOT convinced that Biden would be better for us than Trump, I need you to understand the existential threat of these words:

Losing Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat
to another Brett Kavanaugh.

Do NOT let your ideological purity put us through THAT.

Anything lesser than the evil we have now is a rejection of how far right the Overton Window has been dragged the last few years.  Don’t forget how much we stand to lose if we don’t live to fight another day.

Vote for your life.
