random but it seems like the umbrella academy writers picked up on the fact that a lot of people just don’t like Luther and decided the solution was to lean into how stupid and pathetic he is, and you know what, it kind of works

You know, I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if that’s exactly how it worked out. What irritated me and presumably others wasn’t even that he was acting so self-righteous and horrible but that the narrative was reinforcing it. The other siblings called it out but in the mildest of ways, they still went along with his plans. And that’s what really annoys me about oafish white men leads, where everything they think and feel is centered, even when they’re horrible, their growth and development is still central, at the expense of other characters’.

But the second season really did seem to pull back on that. It worked in two ways, by making him less intolerable and then by elevating the other siblings to a more equal level, especially Vanya. Like, I’ll usually go along with the narrative, but something really rebels in me at this kind of character getting such unearned narrative power, but this second season, when the narrative was inviting you to gently mock and sympathize with him, I was like, I guess. Heh, I mean, I’ll never love him, but I really left the first season loathing him to a point where I was unsure if I’d enjoy this season, but luckily it didn’t work out that way.

Summerland was literally the cutest thing ever!!

Wasn’t it! They just piled on every happy emotional little thing they could. 🙂 I just–I know it’s not the best movie artistically but I so appreciate how it went out of its way to add all that in. It reminded me a lot of the kind of period movies you got in the ‘90s? Except with straight people then, obviously. But it was that kind of thing, and where it won’t really be particularly memorable for most people except for the fact that it’s f/f. But that’s enough for me!

About Summerland: Could you explain the “tracking you down/one call to a publisher” scene please? Not sure I understand what it refers to. I think I missed something :/

That was it, you didn’t miss anything. Which I love, because they were just talking like normal people about a story they both already know, and more importantly, know they both already know, so they can reference it by shortcut instead of awkwardly telling the whole thing again just to clumsily convey exposition to the audience.

We can assume that at some point, most likely quite soon after their reunion, Alice would have wanted to know how Vera found her address to even send Frank. And Vera would have told her that she went to a bookshop, found one of Alice’s books, called up the publisher, and got her address. And that would have been that.

And then in this scene decades later, Vera tells her that she didn’t just go to a bookshop, she went to 23. 23! So of course Alice, the big softie, is moved by that.

oh, you’re very welcome! my duty to promote good content haha – love that you co-signed the other anon even without watching yesterday’s live LOL! they’re adorable together and they genuinely seem so excited and happy about the news, which makes it even better! jeff is always the cherry on top :) really happy for stefania – so many years on greys and she finally gets her due on another show! crazy to think that she’d still be recurring on greys if it weren’t for marina ? cont in the next msg

your ideas about S4 alike to mine and im also hoping that we get to see carina’s situation while growing up. S3 showed everyone’s backstories so the newest regular needs her backstory too! yes, im also a bit confused about what she’s going to do professionally too but so far, i feel like the show has done well in terms of balancing screentime so im hoping they know how to integrate her job into the show too. so excited for her to get proper promotion and to see more shades to their relationship!

Lol, then thank you again. And yeah, cosigned, even without that one live they gave us soooo much good content! …assuming that’s all I missed. I don’t even know now.

And really, it’s so cool that it would have to be the Marina storyline and reception that got her the full time role! That’s our power. 😀 (Joking, obviously.)

True, s3 really delved deep into their backgrounds and even if the process had been started years earlier, like, good luck the same is true for Carina, heh, even if on a different show.

S19 has done okay with screentime among the non-Andy characters, I guess, true, so…if we’re to see the same kind of thing for Carina, plus the fact that she is in a relationship with another regular character, meaning much of their personal story slices of time actually dovetail into one larger story instead of two smaller ones, that’d be pretty interesting. Like, we saw Andy/Jack, Jack/Maya, Andy/Robert, and I don’t expect Marina will get exactly that because all of those involved Andy in some way and caused conflict that affected the whole show (the way the Maya/Andy friendship does, and why I love main character ships so much) but it’ll definitely be a step up from where it is now. Maya’s still the captain, I wonder if that’ll somehow play a part, though I can’t see how yet. Carina isn’t a general doc looking for a job to do, she’s a specialist in a field she likes and is good at and that has very little to do with a fire station… Welp, we’ll see!

I did a Summerland /San Junipero double feature with my friend and we cried like babies because we expected something terrible to happen and it didn’t! Summerland was just the right amount of sweet and the main actress, Gemma I think, was wonderful with her expressions. We’re both partial to Gugu, I really hope she keeps dropping these sapphic gems on us every few years. And I loved seeing old wlw! That’s rare!

Awww, what a twofer! Gemma really was quite lovely, those closeups and her very expressive conflicted face.

Summerland definitely seemed like there’d be a tragic backdrop but the twist was amazing, and then them doubling down on how happy the ending was. :’) Really LOVE these for Gugu but would love for her to get a more central role in one of these, a bit more interiority, you know? But indeed, a great genre to be a part of, and hope there are more to come! Including with more older wlw!
