During Barrett and Danielle’s live, Barrett asked Danielle what she thinks Maya was thinking and I loved Danielle’s answer. Especially the bit where she said what if Jack didn’t show up at her office.. how it wasn’t like Maya actively went out and tried to sleep with Jack. It was more of a wrong place wrong time. Obviously it doesn’t take away from her cheating but it kind of toned down my frustration from this episode a bit. I just really hope this isn’t the end for them.. So much potential..

And another anon:

Self sabotaging Maya. She just can’t help herself when people get too close. She did the 1 thing she knew would drive Carina away and boy was she harsh about telling her. Unless Carina has actually fallen in love with this idiot, i don’t see why they’d get back together. It’s interesting, cheating is often done by a person feeling insecure or falling for someone else, whereas Maya did it 100% on purpose to drive someone away (Jack was just a body). I wonder if that makes a difference to Carina?

If I’m entirely honest, it makes a difference to me. I hate cheating between my ships because–well, for obviously lots of reasons, but in terms of continuing shipping it usually signals the beginning of the end because if they’re into someone else enough to betray the first person, that’s kind of it, right. Basically, Maya can put in the work and try to resolve her issues, but she can’t exactly resolve falling for someone else, you know? That’s just a new romance, not an actual problem to address. But this makes it about something else, which is no defense, of course, of course, it’s still incredibly hurtful and dumb and tropey, everything I mentioned in previous asks. But it does help me see a light at the end of this, if they can make their way through.

And yeah, after the initial shock and disappointment of it, I did see people conclude the same thing, it’s pure self-sabotage from Maya, not about Jack, as evidenced by her telling Carina immediately. I think even without Danielle’s input that was coming through clearly. But I AM glad Danielle confirmed it, and by the way, how endearing was it when Barrett gave her that opening and voiced what the fans were surely thinking, “What was Maya thinking?” I think the actors being so supportive of this has honestly also sanded the edges of this a bit for me? Because the initial shock came from the reminder of how rep used to be and the fear that that’s how this would go, but things are different. Not NEARLY as much as they could be, but just seeing the better treatment from the actors is one thing, and of course for me at least, there are various ships with their positive rep over the last year that’ve left me in a much better place to deal with the negative cases.

It’s ironic but just as much as we were forced to stay with subpar rep before because there wasn’t much else, I’m more comfortable staying with this ship now because there’s more around. Each rare canon ship doesn’t have to be everything, it doesn’t have to stand for all f/f representation. In this case, the narrative sympathy is with Maya for the abuse, yes, but there’s a LOT of it reserved for Carina. Who, by the way, as much as it makes a difference for me that the cheating was a way to push her away and not about Jack, it shouldn’t really make a difference for Carina. Like, oh, you wanted to hurt me that badly? Pfft.

For the ship, so far, this seems just one step on a much longer journey, at some point Maya has to confront the fact that the abuse was real, that’s just TV, and the person who’s been with her on this journey is Carina. The person she’s hurt in an eerily reminiscent way of how her father hurt her family is…Carina. If Maya’s arc is that she was abused and pushes people away now because of that, I’d imagine a resolution would include the person she…has been pushing away. She has to make huge amends, and then we’ll see, I guess.

it’s funny bc i only watched s19 bc of a poster i saw of andy’s actress. thought, ‘oh shes hot’ and watched it when my shows ran out. i finshed it without realizing and actually started to like it. i mean, it’s ridiculous even for broadcast but i love maya and how well the actress plays her. first half of the season was me going ‘dont be mean 2 maya’ @ my tv lol. her and carina are sweet but i have 0 trust as much as i want them to last, this show kills(ppl, places love) in seconds lmao

Oh, Jaina Lee Ortiz? Yeah, she is! I dunno if you caught her in Rosewood (that also had a f/f couple)? But Andy’s great too. I started S19 as just a new show, even though it was a Grey’s spinoff I naively thought it wouldn’t be as dramatic, lol. And at the start, it kind of was okay, and then as soon as Maya and Jack started hanging out, I knew what was going to happen and stopped watching, occasionally looking in to see how things were going. As soon as they broke up, I was back, lol.

It did suck that everyone was so angry at Maya, I’m glad they’ve started showing her background and POV more, I hope the general audience stops hating on her so much. Maybe it’s because I’m just so not in it for the drama, the ups and downs just seem so manipulative, I’m not going to hate on Maya when it’s the writers who keep yanking everyone around. So absolutely, as much as I like this new thing with Carina you just can’t trust anything with this franchise, you wrote this on Wednesday and by the next day, they’d killed off yet another major character. I’m just going to enjoy what I can and hope that when it ends, it’s not in a way that’ll destroy the ship for me completely.

It seems that the excitement for the half of it is misplaced and will only lead to whining about the movie after it comes out, people have been selling it as this glorious lesbian romcom when it really isn’t.

Ah, well, if the ending holds, maybe, although I wouldn’t characterize it as “whining”, I think people are allowed to be upset at the difference in what’s available. When you see Netflix put out a bunch of m/f romcoms and then one f/f movie which totally reads like a romcom, if it’s not…I get it.

But of course on the flip side, Alice Wu is entitled to make whatever she wants, she’s not solely responsible for making up for decades of underrepresentation (especially when she made one of the first good and still tragically rare f/f romcoms we DO have) and people shouldn’t go after the cast or crew or even fans who do like it or ruin it for them. It’s always a balance, right, unless something is clearly deliberate and egregious, stick with criticizing the trends more than individual creators, don’t fill the tags with hate, etc.

And maybe it won’t be so bad, Portrait of a Lady on Fire wasn’t the happiest ending but the f/f community embraced it. And this ending should be happier than that, at least. And you know, I realize you might be talking about two different reasons people’ll be disappointed, both the ending and the fact that it’s more about a friendship between Ellie and the dude, but Saving Face wasn’t just between Viv and Wil either. In fact, it had not only Wil and her mom but the whole separate subplot of Wil’s mom and her bf. And most of us were okay with it. It depends a lot on how it’s done and Alice Wu is pretty skilled at balancing it all.
