Wow, that’s an interesting and nice way to look at it. It could apply to Juls, where she feels, “I’m definitely still in this. I can’t be with Val right now for so and so reasons, but I’m hers.” But then that feeling of betrayal during the Sergio bullshit probably came from the fact that she felt she HAD broken it. Even though she hadn’t stopped being in love with Val at any point, do you think Juls felt she’d kept it?
I’m afraid I do think that–even if for understandable reasons–Juls broke it. I’ve never blamed her or thought badly of her for it but it’s a promise she made to a person, not just to herself, not just about herself. If you’re in, I’m in. Val was in, through quite a bit of trouble and in fact, that was precisely WHY Juls backed out, she thought that’s what would make it easiest for Val. Val in, Juls out, better for Val. But what she failed to see was that she was what Val wanted and needed the most. So all Val saw was that she’d put in the effort but when it mattered the most Juls had backed out.
She can’t read Juls’s mind, she couldn’t know how much Juls was still yearning for her, what was going through Juls’s mind and why her reasons made sense to her. Anything she could actually totally correctly tell herself about how Juls was still calling her up and looking at her the same way and treating her the same way–well, but she wasn’t in, was she?
No wonder she had that moment of frustration.
