Hi, I hope you don’t mind me publishing this, but I just want to say, no problem. 🙂Â
I understand so much that need for validation from others’ opinions, is anyone a bigger people pleaser than me? Heh. Or being influenced by them to the point where you feel you’re missing out if you don’t enjoy one of the few widely accepted Good things we get, but I think the older you get, the more you’ll be willing to say, well, too bad, but that’s not for me. You’ll find out what things you like and don’t like and why and decide yourself if you even want to try them.Â
That’s not to say that I think one should stay in a total rut, I do need to push myself out of my comfort zone more, or not interrogate why I like what I like at all (for example, oh, what a coincidence, I only like media with thin white people, I’m sure there’s no reason for that or any need to branch out), but you know, it’s entertainment at the end of the day and I know what I love, what I tolerate, and what I don’t like. And endings are freaking vital to me.
I place so much value on the future story and togetherness, the experience itself is not enough for me. (Portrait fans, you don’t need to explain to me how it’s actually only bittersweet or even a happy ending through a particular lens, I totally accept that it’s a wonderful, moving, poetic work of art with layers and beauty and introspection and if one has the mildest inclination to watch, they absolutely should, my friend who agrees with me 95% of the time on endings LOVED it, so I totally get that it can work.) I don’t even like stories where you get an epilogue where you find out the couple lived happily ever after for decades and then died together at like 100. No! I want the potential for more! It’s that important to me. Which, I’m realizing this moment, is probably why I prefer not just TV shows to movies, but continuing TV shows to completed ones…but that’s a different conversation.Â
You can always ask me to validate you, anon, and yeah, it feels especially isolating when it seems like everyone is into something you’re not, but having the freedom to have your own preferences is like one of the best parts about consuming media. Don’t feel guilty about not enjoying something as you should, or like you’re in the wrong for a different reaction. ^_^
