hey so topic switch from your current asks lol but it’s nice to see you on the manifest tag! did you hear the creator say saanvi would have a romantic plot line in the upcoming season 3 with a character we won’t expect? i’m super curious about it because expected characters would be alex or ben so i’m assuming it won’t be either of them esp. with how good ben/grace are.. won’t lie there’s a part of me hoping it’ll be mick’s partner drea plus the actress has played gay before in charmed (i feel like ben with his connect the dots board rn) or maybe a new character entirely? either way i can’t wait to see what they do with saanvi considering how she ended this last season
Ooh, yes, Manifest, honestly, I’d forgotten all about that. I hadn’t heard anything about it in ages, I wasn’t sure it was even returning anytime soon. Wait, I liked her with Alex, boooo. But I’m glad she won’t die, she was in some trouble at the end .D:
Hmm…right, I’m glad it’s most likely not Ben, I actually really like him with Grace. That dance in the middle of the street…ah, Josh Dallas can do that Charming gaze quite well, heh.
Not Alex or Ben…I guess Bethany’s also kind of predictable, as the other wlw, and I’d never want to see them broken up (but would like to see more of them in general, please!). Drea definitely fits and I would of course love to see Ellen Tamaki in another f/f role and just have more to do on this show (though most of all I’d love to see her return to Charmed :/), but I’m mostly just hoping it’s not Jared or Zeke, Saanvi doesn’t need to be involved with all that. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they brought Lourdes back. But no, I think the new character guess isn’t a bad one, it might even be like, someone involved with the military/government? Surely she’s going to only be more embedded on that side of the plot after the season finale, or with, like, someone who knows the Major. But who knows, they’ve kept her…plot-centric enough, I don’t have complaints about that, but so separated from the other characters, her story seems a bit more random than everyone else’s.
Wrt to jodie comer it’s only from like certain angles or expressions lol but something about her eyes and nose or something like that was really striking to me ?
And another anon:
omg I totally agree with the anon saying april looks like jodie comer! imo she’s like a mix of jodie and mandy moore! (also can i say blair sometimes reminds me of… blake lively???
There are two of you who think this?? Have I just forgotten what Jodie Comer looks like? Do I…even know who Jodie Comer is? I just–I–maybe. Certain features, I guess, if you focus on them specifically. I don’t think they’re the ones I’m focusing on! Lol, but I mean, sure, who am I to say anything either way. The Mandy Moore addition, definitely can see that.
Blake Lively and Blair…I see why you’re the one who agreed with Jodie Comer anon. 😛 But no, I don’t NOT see it, but hilariously, I see Anna Kendrick way more? At this rate, we’re gonna go through all white actresses.
Speaking of 3%. It still blows my mind that Michele (Bianca Comparato) is dating Alice Braga irl lol
Wh-wh-whAT? Still??? YOu are blowing my mind RIGHT NOW ANON
Wha–okay, FIRST of all, Bianca Comparato is 34?? Second, she’s a wlw? As is Alice Braga?? Isn’t that one of the actresses Stefania Spampinato had, like, a girlcrush on (when they were asked specifically about that)?? W–… I don’t know what to do with this, but I love this information, anon!
Genuine question but why are some actors allowed to get away with gay baiting while some aren’t? Is it just stan culture and biases?
Oof, that’s a question! Umm, in general or with me? Personally, I’m usually pretty mild about that kind of thing and don’t really ascribe…bad faith intentions in that way, I guess? I feel like it’s part of their job to sell a nice picture and if they make fans happy on the way, as m/f costar romances did, I don’t really see the issue. And that’s if it seems played up at all and not just a genuine good friendship from the start. And the same can be said for a lot of other fans, I’ve never seen a fandom where everyone thinks the same about everything BUT, okay, there can be a majority consensus at a certain point, and I guess that does come down to the big influential fans and as you said, the culture and bias within that fandom.
I guess if you really want to get into it, it depends what stage the ship and actor friendship is at. If you’re talking about what I think you’re talking about, that’s still very much on its upward trajectory, the same place other ships/friendships were at some previous point in time. People being happy with something for now doesn’t mean they always will be.
Even the actors you think who didn’t “get away with it” probably were, at some point. As long as things are all right with the ship/fandom, people will generally be happy and tolerant of whatever kind of “baiting” or “pandering” or whatever you want to call it, but I think one of two things happens and the mood turns. Either the ship has a bad end or the actors’ friendship dissolves (publicly, at least) and suddenly fans feel used and manipulated, and embarrassed for it. The more personal and emotional investment there was and the more abrupt the turn, the worse they feel, and that frustration’s gotta go somewhere.
A bunch of factors go into it, smaller fandoms will never really reach the point where they become their own self-contained content and engagement engines, so it’s harder to be as all in for them, which decreases the final disappointment. The further we get, the less inevitable the ship/friendship destruction I mentioned above seems, we’re getting some happy endings now and actors don’t seem to feel the same awkwardness and pressure about being shipped (although it still VERY much depends on the individual). Big name fans encouraging good behavior and moderation around the actors can help from things running away. More ships going on at once stops people from pinning all their hopes on the one. A lot of things. I suppose, at the end of it, fans judge how sincere the actors were, and bad ends tend to color everything that came before, but as long as everything’s all right, the fans are happy with it.
Ivy in the comics is less bored, chill, sarcastic and indifferent and more cold, calculated, sexy, intelligent and generally entirely misanthropic. There are a LOT of opportunities to read her as asexual/lesbian/both. I love how she detests humanity, not because of social awkwardness but for political and existential reasons. And that makes her devotion to harley very special.
Oh, hmm, hmm. I mean, I do get her hating people in general in the show, although from 2×06 it seems to stem from her parents and not social awkwardness? But still, I think I get what you’re saying. And that DOES make her Harley exception all the more unique.
The only other version of her I really know is Uma Thurman in that one movie and I barely remember it. THAT was definitely different from this one, but also seems to be different from what you’re describing. Maybe I should try some of these comics…
I’m so frustrated with the harley animated series. I LOVE it, it’s so funny, harley is great, they’re doing harlivy etc etc, but ivy is just… too unlike comic ivy. I get they’re all sort of parodies, but i just wish they had made her more like ‘herself’, like harley. And less mermista. Side note: i cried laughing when those birds kept flying into the invisible vehicles. And the lobster omg
Oh, what’s she like in the comics? I mentioned before I know very little about these characters (and actually, for reasons too long to go into, I used to dislike the character of Harley until this show) but I like this Ivy! A lot. I like the dryness, the devotion toward and protectiveness over her best friend, the Mermistaness…lol. My first comparison had been Daria, but yeah, Mermista is pretty spot on. Huh, i really wonder what Ivy as you like her would be like in this show.
And omg, the invisible tech. Those poor birds. They didn’t need an invisible van!
Heh, the writers were really happy about that lobster and that whole sequence, huh. I was wondering what the point of the King Shark story was, but of course it was to highlight Ivy making the “safe” choice and settling for KM instead of her soulmate. <3
Anything new?
In terms of f/f content? I guess if we’re speaking about new f/f that I haven’t posted much about, there’s (varying levels of spoilers for all):
- Betty on HBO – Four eps in, kind of a laid back look at female street skateboarders, at least two of the main cast, Kirt and Honeybear, are wlw, with side character love interests each
- Hightown on Starz – Two eps in, lesbian lead Jackie Quinones, gonna be compared to Stumptown a lot, for obvious reasons, but the tone is much grittier
- Alles was Zaht, a long-running German soap – This storyline having started building since March, Ina’s already out, Chiara’s image-conscious and going through a coming out arc
- Skam France – Five eps in, I guess, I don’t know much about this, but you know how it goes with Skam, a character focus per season, this season’s main is Lola and I guess she’s having a time of it, from what it looks like, lol, the love interest being Maya
- Homecoming on Amazon Prime – The second season dropped on Thursday, it’s not an anthology series but the first season’s lead was Julia Roberts and it switches to focus on an entirely new character played by Janelle Monae in the second, and while it would spoil a lot to reveal even the premise of the show I will say that Janalle Monae’s character is involved with a woman and Hong Chau, Lady Trieu in HBO’s Watchmen, is in both seasons. It’s not necessarily a happy ending, nor are the characters even particularly rootable, but I chose to take it as optimistic.
- Defending Jacob on Apple+ – Seven eps in, one of the side characters, the lawyer for the suspect, is played by Cherry Jones, lesbian in real life (and Sarah Paulson’s ex), also married to a lady in the show, though we just get a mention of it, but I just thought it was nice 😮
- Control Z on Netflix – A LOT of spoilers on this one, lol: The first season dropped on Friday, a goddamn mess of a show, one of those Gossip Girl/Elite type high school dramas, where students keep getting their secrets revealed to the rest of the school, but one of the first and biggest secrets is revealing a popular girl is trans, and that’s just…mean. To place that on the same level as affairs and drugs and whatever. Maybe the actress, also trans, found it cathartic, obviously no judgment on her AT ALL, not like the roles out there are plenty, but it just feels cruel to put that kind of bullying on a character when it’s sensationalized and there’s so little to balance it out there. And she does seem to have a triumphant arc, so there’s that. Anyway, there’s an out lesbian, Alex, with her own secret (she’s having an affair with a teacher, yeah, like I said, that kind of show).
- Snowpiercer on TNT – Two eps in, plain reboot of the movie, two of the characters introduced in the first ep, Bess and Jinju, haven’t interacted onscreen yet (that I’ve noticed) were making out in the trailer, lol.
- Run on HBO – First season finished yesterday, I guess, also not watching this, but PWB shows up in the last three eps of the season according to IMDB, with her love interest played by Tamara Podemski (who also plays a wlw on Coroner, so yay)
