If you’re in the mood for a mainstream fantasy novel with lots of interesting intricate worldbuilding and a good female heroine whose story doesn’t get subsumed by a dude, don’t read this. I’m kidding, this is perfect for that.
Essentially, we have the typical made up world with different merchant groups vying for power. What’s unique here is a system of magic called scribing, where objects can be “convinced” that reality is different from what they perceive. Two things can be scribed to believed they’re part of one whole so they’re both pulled together like magnets. Or weapons are convinced they’re falling from a great height so gravity gives them catastrophic power. The lead is a thief who’s been tasked with stealing something and that of course sets in motion the larger plot.
I would very strongly draw comparisons between this and Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn, except the romance is f/f. And there isn’t actually much of it, it’s only at the very corner of things, but sometimes I just want to read fantasy where there isn’t a central m/f romance and this does have that.
