26 Favorite Femslash Moments of 2014
24. Matador – Reyna and Silda

Okay, so I LOVED Matador. Loooved it. Typical brash rule-breaking male cop? Check. Completely subverting the usual tropes by him being a really lovely Latino dude who’d only break the rules when his superiors would give him gross orders that put people’s lives in risk? Also check. Writing him as incredibly respectful to all the women in his life and casting the adorable Gabriel Luna? Double check. Partner him with a hot, responsible blonde who’d bust out the actress’s real Aussie accents for undercover work, and I’m sold.

However, the show was not so kind to the one semi-regular queer lady. Reyna Flores was a fun side character at first, the sports reporter hyping up the Matador’s reputation and possibly getting too close to real his identity. She’d shared a heavily flirtatious scene with Silda earlier, and I’d been waiting for more of them. Then we got this scene. If it feels a bit stilted and weird, that’s because It is. Shortly after this, Reyna goes to attempt to assassinate a crime boss, and obviously knew she might not survive. She did not. What a waste of a character, and cruel too, another queer lady and WoC death.

But in the few scenes we did get, it was nice to have them.

25. Black Sails – Max comforting Eleanor

Ugh, this show. So there were months of hype for it, not just pirates but LESBIAN pirates??! A few gifs from the trailer of a show that hadn’t even aired yet quickly racked up a ton of notes. And the first ep delivered! This scene, from the end of it, finished off introducing the characters and their dynamic. Max clever and manipulative, Eleanor brash and hotheaded and trying to maintain control, and both genuinely caring for each other! That’s what got me, the feelings and history behind them. It’s obvious Eleanor has come to Max before and Max has tended to her and listened to her and this has become both of their safe haven. As soon as Max saw her drinking at the bar, she went over and took away her drink, and Eleanor let her, and then allowed herself to be led away in front of the very people she was trying to show strength.

Annnnd then that was pretty much the peak of their relationship, everything going downhill in a violent, heartbreaking way. Props for both of them still being alive?

26. Saving Hope – Maggie and Sydney’s first kiss

Heh, it’s a sign not really of how good the rest of this list is but more how out of the blue the kiss was that this rests at the bottom of the list. It continued on to become one of the storylines with the most potential, actually, especially in 2015, but at the time, it was puzzling. Obviously, with how TV works, it was going to be the start of a storyline, but…I’d have expected the start to be earlier? There were hints, I suppose, if you looked back, but they were mostly so subtle I would never have expected this.

The reason it’s on the list at all, though, is because just the promise of something more was nice for these two characters. Maggie’s been on the show from the start, and is adorable, and Sydney joined the series in 3×02 with so much presence and personality, I liked her immediately. They’ve spent a lot of time together already and established a good dynamic. Sydney’s tough love mentoring settled down into more of a friendship because Maggie knows when to take things in stride and when to push back, gently and straight to the point.

The storyline’s also interesting because from the start we knew Sydney was an Orthodox Jew and it was something she took seriously. It didn’t define her or affect her ability, she’s an extremely skilled and young OB/GYN, but it was there. We’ve seen the intersection of LGBT and religion before, but I can’t recall anything like this, where there are so many facets, her religion (again, we’ve seen Christianity so much and even a few Muslim from like, Iran, but Orthodox Judaism?), her upbringing, her somewhat stilted social skills, her genius, her youth, and her potential queerness. At one point, she tells a hormonal Maggie (affected by an earlier miscarriage) to pick crying or laughing, then to stop doing both, only to later offer her helpful advice. Whatever was going to unfold was going to be intriguing and new, if done well.
