Ahhhh you’re one of my favorite blogs and you know about Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga?? I’m so excited absnksmansk

Thank you! Heh, yeah, this wasn’t always 24/7 Juliantina. Just go a month back and I had a very balanced, diversified blog. 😛

One thing I did catch is that it’s banned in Pakistan. Even as mild as it apparently is, it’s still not even going to be allowed. I wonder if that will pique the interest of younger Pakistanis to find some way to watch it, I did see comments on Twitter about how it shouldn’t have been banned and they wanted to see it.

The trailers of Ek Ladki are making me believe it’s essentially going to be a Saawariya with a gay twist. The movie will be a frame narrative told by Raj’s character from his perspective.

That does seem more likely. Which. I dunno. The first mainstream Bollywood movie about a lesbian told through the POV of the guy who falls in love with her? It is what it is, I guess. Gotta give the hets something to watch for? Ease them into things? All right, all right. I calmed my own anger in this one paragraph, lol.

He is one of the leads. But I’m also guessing the fakeout is to make it past some of the shittier rightwingers who’d definitely start riots over this.

You think so? It’s interesting, all the same and reflects the state of things, I guess. They can make the movie but promoting it is a different thing. And heh, my comment about being lead was mostly angry hyperbole, I know he is a lead, but not the lead. But there was more of him (and his viewpoint) than Sonam or Anil’s. Presumably they’re holding back her parts with the other girl and thus the full story?

@booasaur I don’t necessarily follow Bollywod films but even when they released the teaser 6 months ago there was absolutely zero mention of a coming out story and then the full trailer dropped and we all clued in. I’m hoping that we don’t get the female version of the song but it’s like the sad version because I won’t be able to take that.

Idk maybe I’ve just been living outside of that cultural bubble where I just except Bollywood to do an outright wlw film if they say they are going to do one. The spin seems more about the process of coming out. Who knows if there is some sort of resolution at the end of the film.

OMG! Even the youtube hashtag is letlovebe but again you’d think it was about the guy & girl.

As for what will happen on the 1st? ‍♀️. They still need to fill seats so they need to sell it in a package that makes sense.

Oh yeah, I didn’t even think about it but we should get a female version of the song. Wow, yeah! A woman singing it? So powerful! I’d forgive everything if that happened, lol. Shreya Ghoshal, please, get on that.

It’s definitely gonna be less about romance and more about the father-daughter relationship and I guess the friendship between Rajkumar’s character and Sonam’s as he…learns to accept she won’t ever be in love with him and then he helps her? The whole “unexpected romance” tagline and #letlovebe don’t make sense if it’s het, they just don’t.

I hope this is just straightbaiting

It’s gotta be, right? Though I dunno if tricking people is the best way to go…putting off the storm as long as they can, lol.

@booasaur if the average person watches this without knowing anything about the film they’d have no clue about the wlw storyline in the film. The entire video reads from his viewpoint (granted from the trailer he looks like he’s retelling a story) and I’m guessing that’s how Bollywood wants the vast majority of its audience to view the film.

Is this…a surprise they’re going to spring on people? A trap they’ve set for them? What do they think will happen on the 1st when it premieres?

I don’t know if this is the obligatory internet negativity that comes after the announcement of anything, but I keep running into the comments Sonam isn’t a good actress. Then others are saying she is more than ok. Can you provide any insight?

Okay, I’m going to confess something and I don’t want you guys to think too badly of me for it: I can’t really tell when an actor is bad.

I mean, major overacting I can usually go hmmm at but really, I just take everything as a choice. Like, oh, I guess they’re just playing a person who’s really flat or really histrionic. After all, people can be like that in real life. And at times I’ve thought, huh, that person’s delivery is really monotone and weird and then everyone’s like, oh, they’re great.

In Sonam’s case, I haven’t really paid much attention to her current career, but she’s always seemed at least serviceable to me? I was still living in Pakistan when Saawariya came out and since much of Pakistani cable is Indian channels, we saw the promo for it and then the movie itself. (And that’s another reason this is going to be so interesting–a whole section of Pakistan is going to be exposed to this movie too, by virtue of the fact that however much else they disagree on, they share so much of their pop culture. Put together, India and Pakistan’s population exceeds 1.5 billion.)

Saawariya was her first role, I think, and to me she was fine. Maybe that’s not very confidence-boosting, given the above, but you should already have some idea of what I like and don’t like from what I post. I think it might depend a lot on the role, and perhaps the director. She’s got a great face and expressive eyes. If I absolutely had to point out a flaw, maybe her dialogue can come across as unconvincing under certain extreme circumstances? But the melodramatic heights Bollywood movies reach aren’t where most of the movie will take place. And again, some people are just like that!

I’ve seen a couple of other things with her, some of Neerja and Khoobsurat, and I really don’t think she’ll be the weak link here. It’ll come down to the writing either way.
