Ooooh, I didn’t know that! I mean, from that other comic! That’s so awesome. Even as it was already within just 2×06, I loved it! I think I started to actually annoy my friend a bit how many times I was like, but, see, THAT’s the VERY THING, that HE and then SHE–BUT THEN IT WAS ACTUALLY HER STORY ALL ALONG and my friend was very patiently like, yes 🙂 you said, already, a few times, indeed. Like, s2 did do a lot of things so well, and that was one of them, showing that first meeting between seemingly Harley and Joker but pivoting to Harley and Ivy, including that very story. That kind of deliberate setup is something I’m always going to adore about canon stories.
But looking up this Mad Love comic, wow, so it’s even more iconic and a bigger and deeper tie-in than I was thinking! Something from 1994 used to reinforce Harlivy…like, that’s plain soulmate evidence. Thanks so much for telling me! Man, I’m starting to get pretty interested in these two beyond just the show, just to see callbacks like this and Rose Bud and Harley’s immunity, these historical references starting to take new meaning and shaping their new canon future. It’s so cool to see it happening right in front of us.
Honestly, I mostly bought them on amazon before I really thought about how shitty bezos is as it was more convenient and cheaper at the time… Think I got a couple at books a million and one at a local comic store iirc. If u like digital I think they’re on comixology but I prefer hard copies. Some libraries or hoopla might also have digital copies. (2/2)
Right! I’d heard that a lot of characters that were super straight in the rest of DC were queer in this one but wasn’t sure it’d be worth checking out a temporary blip in the whole of DC canon, you know? And mostly I just wasn’t that interested, the characters I cared most about were in other ships. But now that Harlivy’s becoming a more prominent entity in the different universes and I’m actually liking them, I want to check it out.
And yeah, no judgment, Amazon’s so cheap and convenient but, you know. Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll check them out. For comics, I prefer to buy hard copies so the digital avenues won’t work. I wonder if there are plans for a special collected set when all the deluxe editions are out…
Bc DC Bombshells has Harley/Ivy established from the start but I’m definitely gonna pick up the cartoon again. Maybe I’ll wait to see how the next couple eps play out first tho lol.
Oh, interesting, because I had NO investment in them before I started watching, as characters or as a ship, and maybe that helped? I quite like these versions, though, bearing in mind they are villains and there’s a crazy amount of casual violence in the show. So far, I’m willing to say that the nerdbro edgelordness was a bit of a Trojan horse for at least a soft Harlivy friendship, and obviously probably more. It probably also helped that I started after knowing they’d mostly likely happen in s2 and I very much do like a slowburn.
You know, I’ve heard a lot of great things about DC Bombshells but I tend to avoid the big DC/Marvel titles. When I go on a comics every once in a while it’s the smaller publishers or the limited runs, they’re not so overwhelming with the different series and chronologies and continuities and universes and retcons. BUT. I think I want to try DC Bombshells now, even if it’s a different incarnation of Harlivy. Where do y’all get your comics, since I’m trying to not buy from Amazon? I want the deluxe editions, if possible. 😮
by far the best genre of fiction ever invented is short comics about women meeting ghosts/monsters/goddesses/whatever that are ALSO women and them inevitably ending up in love w each other
me, seeing a comic on tumblr starting up w a woman talking about the local spirit of the woods and how she wishes to escape her dull life: ohohoho! i believe she may end up escaping through means she does not anticipate!!
By the time I started looking into f/f media that wasn’t Xena or mostly terrible movies, the Runaways comics was already well under way.
It was great to have an out character in Karolina but I was catching up on canon that already seemed to cement Nico as a one-sided straight girl crush and Xavin as the actual romance. But even then–or maybe, especially then–it was common to have subtext ships involving central characters and Karolina/Nico remained the popular fandom ship. They were both there from the start, with a great dynamic outside of romance, there seemed to always be something between them, and it would be such a fantasy for the straight girl crush to not be straight after all.
But it seemed too unlikely and almost…greedy? to have two original characters be into women and too much like wish fulfillment for Karolina’s enduring pining to be requited.
Fast forward to 2017. Like others, I watched the start of the TV series with some dismay as it somehow made Karolina’s story about Chase. By the time Karolina/Nico happened, it was nice butt felt temporary. I was projecting, perhaps, but given…everything, it wasn’t without cause.
But season 2! Their treatment has been so gratifying. I feared that on Nico’s side the feelings would be conflicted or hesitant, or that as a couple they would be oddly sidelined at times, the characters still there but the relationship simply not brought up. I was wrong and am happy about it! They’re both present as individual characters and as a couple. This is precisely why people love central character ships, they’re interwoven with the main plot and with those characters’ storylines. They touch so many more storylines and characters and they’re all affected by that relationship.
Knowing this is where they were heading, this even retroactively makes season 1 better for me, to know that it carried a weight for the writers even if I hadn’t yet realized it. And that season 2 is an actually good season of TV makes everything better. This is the dream, a good ship in a good show.
