?‍♀️ There was your mini tag/reply review of the Priory of the Orange Tree and very recently? that reblog of the upcoming Mrs. Martin’s Incomparable Adventure book ?between you and dollsome, that one’s now on my list ?

Aww, anon, thank you, but I’ll stop putting you in the position of defending me, lol. I actually ended up finishing Priory last night because of your ask.

Actually, if you are interested in what books I like, in between pausing and picking up Priory again, I reread The Rook by Daniel O’Malley, No f/f but no romance at all, if that helps. Also, Hellspark by Janet Kagan, same thing. I actually do have a books tag but those two are the ones I recommend first an always. For f/f, Poppy Jenkins, while being as different in tone and genre from Priory as a book can be, is lovely.

Trying to decide what to read now, since I’m still in a reading mood.

ooh i feel like Juls would be pretty reserved and serious at work too, so ppl would be like ahh Stoic Creative, but then when Val rocks up Juls gets all soft and all her colleagues are like WHO is this soft bean. is orange tree good btw?

I agree with that.

Juls with everyone else:

Juls with Val:

But really, she does warm up a lot to people she knows and I bet she’s beloved at work, but the way she is with Val is next level, you can’t even compare it to Lupe. Val just opens up something in her and allows to be in a way that nobody else does.

I actually have been enjoying Priory of the Orange Tree a lot! It’s very traditional epic fantasy, you got your dragons, you got your magic, you got your magic swords, you got your detailed worldbuilding, and it’s well-written enough that I’d have enjoyed it just on the basis of that but I cannot deny that the f/f really elevates it. A legit slow burn between the two most interesting and important characters, who happen to be women? I loved them and I loved the romance. And it was a slow burn, I’ve heard people say the romance doesn’t start till halfway through (which, it’s an 850 page standalone) but the dynamic starts noticeably changing much earlier than that, in such a delicious oh-you-two-have-no-idea kind of way.

okay i’m desperately trying to remember what this book/artist was called but did anyone ever read a book when you were younger that was basically just a collection of kind of surreal, dream-like illustrations with maybe sentence long caption at the bottom of the page?

the one that i remember the most clearly was a picture of someone who fell asleep reading in bed and there were vines and trees growing out of the book and covering their room. does anyone know what i’m talking about?

The Ten Worst Romance Novel Heroines: 2018 Edition

maddie-grove:

A romance novel heroine generally has less latitude than a romance hero to be awful. In-book, she usually has less physical strength and social power to act on her worst impulses without serious consequences. Out-of-book, she’s subject to harsher judgments from readers. Still, some manage to do some seriously bad shit that’s endorsed, excused, or minimized by the narrative.

This list is a little different from my 2013 list. Back then, I chose the heroines that personally annoyed me the most; this time around, I focused on the heroines whose actions I found the most morally repugnant. As a result, there are a couple of heroines on this list who were eligible for the 2013 version, but didn’t make it because they were almost well-written (#6) or their bullshit was kind of lost in the greater bullshit of the novel (#5).
