Heya! So, I read your post about why you like the type of endings where the future is eternal, and i agree 400%! I’m looking for a new good book (bonus if sci fi or fantasy) with a f/f ship and a GOOD ending. Do you have any recs?

New as in, new to you? Or new overall? I haven’t read much lately, I’m afraid. And when presented with this question, suddenly I feel like I’ve never read anything in my life.

But looking at my goodreads, my first suggestion would be Priory of the Orange Tree? There is A CAVEAT about the ending, but, since you’ve read my entire treatise on what I consider acceptable endings, I can say that I was all right with it, if that’s endorsement enough. Let’s see… This Is How You Lose the Time War? Some of the other books I read were the starts of series and were not particularly happy endings and some of the happier ones I did not particularly care for. Oh! The Nevernight series? The completed trilogy. Santa Olivia, which is definitely not new at all. Hmm, the Elemental Logic series by Laurie J. Marks finally put out its last book, although I found the writing somewhat abstruse. But the first in the series was my first “wait, this mainstream fantasy is gay” surprise and will always hold a soft spot for that. Ohhh, one of my favorite little books, this cute little novelette, Humanity for Beginners, just a bunch of werewolves running an inn.

I think that’s it…for now… I’m looking forward to random stuff that’ll be released this year but this is the only lens through which time seems to move slowly nowadays, heh.

Different anon who just finished it – the end was deeply satisfying as a conclusion to the read. IMO Muir laid it out well in the lead up (multiple huge hints) so it wasn’t a GOT idiot twist but natural progression of the story/their partnership. Yea i want the sequel now and just preordered but after reading a bunch of youthful fantasy romcoms (like the of fire and stars sequel), this was a really nice palate cleanser. Looking back, the ending is pretty well hinted at in the book summary!

Again, so sorry for the lateness of this reply! I’d like to pretend it was because I was worried about spoilers, but that was like 5% of it, the rest of it was just…you know. Me getting distracted by other things.

Still gonna put the rest under a cut:

I’m glad you liked it but I have to disagree with that, anon! Kind of. I never claimed it was a GOT level ending, but it still didn’t make a lot of sense to me. These endings never do, the whole point is that they’re strongly hinted at, or straight up predicted or prophesied but THEN they get subverted. And GIVEN how many small pieces of Gideon’s unfinished story we had, her mom, the other Gideon, the fact that she wasn’t killed by that one draining technique Harrow used or the poison (was that what killed all the other kids of the Ninth? Whatever that was). there’s clearly a lot left of her story and I imagine we’ll either get Harrow investigating it or Gideon back in some form in the sequel anyway, but in either case, I didn’t love it.

I just finished memory of empire. Whew it took me forever to get thru the first like 50 pages, but it was a good read once it got going. But!!!! The ending left me so sad!!! I loved the dynamic bt Mahit/Three Seagrass the entire story, but then the ending was disappointing for me. Asdfghjkl. There’s a sequel tho, right? I need more. And Three Seagrass embroiled in whatever comes next. I thought I was getting ride-or-die vibes the whole book lol. Thanks for the rec.

Ah, as always, sorry this took so long. Still making my way through all these, although who knows if people even care about the answers at this point.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

The ending did feel abrupt! But I saw it as setting up the sequel. I can’t imagine that Three Grass isn’t going to feature in it? But I don’t even know what the sequel will be about. It’s been a while since I read Memory of Empire but she was returning to her home but there was still unease, right, some mystery power outside their border and capable of threatening the whole empire? So surely she’ll be back with the main Teixcalaan powers at some point. You don’t keep the POV character away from important Events. Unless they change the POV character…

I don’t remember so much from the first book, I’m going to have to reread it before the sequel comes out…all the way next year. It got delayed all the way from March 2020 to March 2021. 😡

If you love Sapphic books and want even more of an excuse to read stories about all sort of women-loving-women, there is a fun crossword puzzle going on this year.

FF author Jae is hosting a year-long F/F Fiction Crossword Challenge. Every month, there is a different crossword with a theme, and you fill in clues about different wlw books. (You don’t have to buy or even read all of the books–most of them, the authors chose hints that you can get from book previews or excerpts on their websites or on Amazon). And you can win prizes (hint: the prizes are lots and lots of wlw books!!)

And it looks queer-inclusive, too. There are puzzles dedicated to trans, non-binary, ace, demi, bi, and pan wlw.

It looks really fun and it would be even more fun if more people joined in!

Here’s the link if you want to check it out!

Hmm, finished Gideon the Ninth! I didn’t mind the ending personally, maybe ’cause I’m still processing right now, though I can definitely understand! But wow, all I can say is that I’m really looking forward to the sequel and Gideon is just so ??

Damn, since you sent this late last night, you must have read nonstop. Glad the ending didn’t send you reeling, BUT! Anon! Were you warned? Instead of being COMPLETELY blindsided? Like one poor innocent reader who had NO IDEA what was about to happen and blithely read the ARC she trusted with her foolish girlish heart? Hmmmmm? 😛

But yes, the need I had for the sequel upon finishing! I don’t even think there’s a date, although, there are titles! Not just for the second, Harrow the Ninth,

which you probably saw at the end of this one, but the third one is called Alecto the Ninth?? What is that?? Who is that?? Did I miss some random mention of some being who’ll become significant? Is it like, a combination of Gideon and Harrow?

Oh, I just checked again on goodreads, Harrow the Ninth, June 2nd 2020. That’s…not that far from now? I had to literally check my desktop calendar to make sure this year was 2019, it feels crazy that the sequel’s coming out in less than a year? I’d expect, if June, of 2021. The second Teixcalaan book will come out 18 months after the first one. But maybe part of the reason it took so long for Gideon to come out was the polishing up of the next one? And it’s almost ready? …assuming the date’s even correct, of course. Heh.

But anyway, I loved Gideon the character, and I absolutely need her to be a major part of the next book.

I’m 1/3 through Gideon the Ninth, and independent of everything, it’s funny! “He had the eyes of a very beautiful person, trapped in resting bitch face.” I think I gurgled a little.

Ahhh, that’s right! It’s outtttt today. That’s exciting!

It is! Isn’t it? It’s funny in a way that really worked for me, so irreverent and modern amid like, very classical gothic scifi. I highlighted so many lines like that. Especially for Harrow, who I adored. The humor was the throughline for me and the strongest justification for keeping it as a rec no matter what else happened.

I’ve finally finished reading A Memory Called Empire, and wow! It’s a fantastic book, really enjoyed it! The last half was amazing and I loved so many characters! Thank you for reccing it!!

Ah, I’m glad you were able to get through that dense, intimidating start! It really is such a pretty book behind all that. The setup was a lot, I know, but once that was all done, I loved how smoothly it flowed.

I’m happy you liked it and thanks for letting me know! Only a year and 20 days to wait for the sequel!

Thank you for the Gideon the Ninth review! I’m still digesting it, but just wanted to say I really appreciate how it’s so thoughtful/well thought-out/synonym/synonym! Looking forward to it still, and going off your your post, maybe i’ll be looking forward extra hard to the sequels… (Do you know the schedule for those?)

Ah, thank you! I agonized at how to handle it because there were just so many different factors at play. I think–heh–I GUESS that I will still like it, lol.

That’s a really good question about the sequel release schedule but I have no idea, can’t find any dates. Probably, like, well into the next presidency.
