What’s Powers about? Is it good?

It’s a TV adaptation from the PlayStation Network (!) of the Powers comic, set in a world where super powers exist. It focuses on a couple of cops that work in the “powers” division, dealing with powered bad guys, and since it’s not part of DC or Marvel, the world’s pretty much new and easy to get into.

I don’t know if I’ve decided if the show’s good, yet, it’s somewhat different in tone from the comic, but seems kind of seedy and lowkey for a show about superpowers. That might be the tone they’re going for, though, they seem to emphasize the darker, R rated tone (not necessarily in the grim Nolan way).

would you ever want a fried green tomatoes film remake?

What a random and difficult question!

Done perfectly, all right, sure. But the original was so well cast and just really well done in general, except obviously for the, you know, how they handled the relationship. But the ambiguous nature of it bothered me less than the ending, which, unless the director calls up Fannie Flagg and gets permission to change, we’ll always get anyway.

But representation and faithfulness to the source and all that, I do get that they matter, and I know myself enough to realize just how happy I’d be if they made it explicit, so, yeah. I’d be fine with one. But gosh, the casting would have be perrrfect. I’m still so attached to MSM and MLP.

how would you like Maggie x Sydney’s relationship to play out in season 4?

Oh, man, I have no idea. Obviously what’ll actually happen depends on Stacey Farber’s role next season, which could be not much, since she’s been cast as a lead in an NBC pilot.

But for what I would ideally want, well, I know at some point I was all, we don’t know much about Maggie, maybe she’s just there to facilitate Sydney’s self-discovery, I just want Sydney to be happy with who she is, it’s all about her journey~ but they actually did play it all out, and faster and better than I expected and I AM shipping them specifically now. So I do want them together, but they’ve gone about this so backwards, a kiss, backing off, a vague admission of some feelings, whatever happened in the call room (heavy making out at least), backing off, and then Sydney breaking her engagement but no real visible movement. Syd’s gone through a proper arc, but we still have the potential drama with Dr. Dey, and I don’t think we’ve seen the payoff to the earlier foreshadowing about how Maggie wanted a more passionate love than what Gavin could apparently give to her.

I suppose I’m fine with whatever as long as they continue pursuing it, though I’d prefer no triangle with Dey. I want to see more indications about what Maggie’s thinking and feeling during all this, she’s been so, so chill. I want them both to show that it’s not just a fling because the other one was there at the right time, but to actually admit that they liiiike the other, I want dates that start out awkward but ending being great because Syd’s Syd and Maggie’s Maggie, I want Syd to be friends with Shahir and they can have appallingly open (to everyone else) discussions about how they handle their cultures and being gay, I want Alex to tease Maggie about it all and also get Maggie to open up a bit, I want incredibly awkward conversations between Alex and Syd during their followups, I want there to be more banter with calling each other doctor now that Maggie’s passed, and I would like a big romantic moment where Sydney gets to show her passionate side.

what are you’re thoughts/feelings on Ephra Stein?

Heh, for a second I was like who, but yes, Ephra. Hmmm, I guess I mostly felt sorry for him, trapped and manipulated by circumstances as much as his sister (but to a way lesser degree, obviously). I didn’t like him earlier on, he seemed strangely quiet and standoffish from the start, if you recall that first event where Nessa was announcing who won the contract, and considering the type of show it was, I thought he was up to something too. That turned out to be an affair, which didn’t make me like him any more, especially since I kind of shipped her with someone else already *coughs* but also because all we knew then was that Atika worked in his household, which is always a weird and gross power imbalance.

It was made clearer what their dynamic was, though, so slowly I ended up just pitying him. He had vaguely good intentions but always lived in others’ shadows, dominated by the women in his life (though I hated him in that moment when he told Nessa he carried on the affair with Atika because he needed a secret of his own—but then he didn’t know her feelings) and resentful of them. He was just very weak.
