I can feel that they’re going to try redeem zeedan by making him seem conflicted. Poor Rana’s sobs at the end.

Yep, I was thinking, after all the bile he spat, suddenly that “you’ve been crying” (SHE’S BEEN CRYING ALL DAY RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU?? BECAUSE OF YOU?????) and the reaction to her sobs is a clear indication to the audience he’s softening. Meh. His language and behavior and hypocrisy in living a lie for money when he’s so ready to destroy her life over it, yuck. Even if he’s the one who backs out of this contract, with the show once again depriving Rana of her agency, I’ll just be glad it’s over.

His language especially. You don’t suddenly develop a different vocabulary when you’re angry (as anybody who games online knows). That’s your natural truest vocab. I’ve no time for him, I don’t care if it’s the writing deliberately doing that.

Necessary… but not looking forward to tonight’s #Kana

Well, not gonna lie and say I’m not nervous either. We’ve always known it’s a soap but being reminded so blatantly last week that they’ll always prioritize drama over story and suddenly that coming to the fore when they’re at the part that should be the handled the most sensitively! But that’s my only concern, really, that they’ll something forced for heightened drama. I know the outing itself will be tough but we’ve already gone through Zee finding out and the preview, it’s going to be more crying, possibly shouting, and Bhavna’s great acting.

TBH I don’t even think Weds was that horrible if you remove the kitchen and Aiden’s scenes. The thing I’m flabbergasted about now is why the hell are Rana and Kate mad at each other and why, now that Zee knows about them, can’t they just decide to be together. I could do scenes in my mind to fill the gaps that lead to the current situation, but I *shouldn’t have to*

Right, that’s why I’m partly like, it’s not THAT big a deal, literally two moments in more than a hundred by now, BUT. Two moments after the reveal they’ve been heading toward for months. As you say, I don’t get why they’re mad and why they’re not like, well, he knows, let’s go for it. How are we supposed to reconcile these two with any version of them in January or December?

What I loved about them getting together was that it was because of openly communicating, and they’ve mostly been so good with that since. To go back to this combative defensive not talking is contrived, sure, but the way it happened on screen was just bad writing. At least explain with a line why they think what they think and why they’re acting how they’re acting.

I think Rana’s mad at Kate because she told Zeedan? And then just left her. I think it would have been unrealistic if rana wasn’t mad at Kate.

I mean, if we’re to understand that Kate simply told Zee and then had literally not a single conversation more, yeah, yeah, I can get that Rana would be mad, but it boggles the mind that they WOULDN’T have talked about it even a little? Rana thinks, what, that Kate is totally into Sophie now and told Zee out of spite and she’s not even going to question it?? That is surely unrealistic as well, yes?

You used the writing as an excuse for Kate’s actions after the reveal so why can’t you do the same for zee? The situations aren’t the same obviously but in both cases it’s the writing that’s making the characters act ott

You’re right and I have mentioned it, several times, it’s the writing that’s going to make Zee act like this, and then after Wednesday, bunched Kate together with him. I did post those tags about being angry with him in the heat of the moment so things may change in a few months as I predicted, but like you said, the situations are different and that might be enough for me here. I’m just gonna list my thoughts out in an effort to organize them:

Kate’s actions aren’t just OOC, they’re inexplicable. Until a certain point they remain understandable and sympathetic and then they’re neither. Her behavior is so forced it’s difficult NOT to see the writer’s hand. She does a complete about face and then barely acknowledges something that was consuming her life days before. Zee, while OOC from how we regarded him before, remains understandable. He’s doing all this because he wants to hurt Rana, the narrative could not be more clear. And while it may be forced to progress the plot, literally everything in fiction is to progress a plot and his actions since the reveal haven’t come out of nowhere or been inconsistent within themselves. So it’s easier to accept them as part of him.

It’s ALSO easier to accept them as part of him because they diverge from his base characterization less than Kate’s did hers. Like, actually, for Kate, participating in an affair itself was a literally out of character thing that was explained by this being a new feeling for her even though it was also kind of a forced plot thing when honest self-righteous Kate could have just waited longer. But as you know, soaps. But Kate sobbing about seeing Rana and Zee together physically hurting her and then in the same day just brushing off the fact their affair has been revealed, partly at her hands…where is the consistency in that? On the other hand, Zee was an occasionally jealous, possessive boyfriend who became a chill husband who’s now furious at his cheating wife and doing everything he can to hurt her. His characterization doesn’t have to stretch as far to encompass his new actions.

Ultimately, I don’t really care enough about Zee in the moment to do the work to put everything aside and continue liking him. Why should I? What does he have to offer aside from being a somewhat nice Muslim guy, which he isn’t even anymore? He’s going to out someone for the sole purpose of hurting them. His character’s going to have to acknowledge the horrors of that and apologize for me to even consider liking him again.

The shows saddening, but some people’s reactions… just highlights how closeminded some people are as they can’t even begin to understand what’s difficult about Rana’s situation. There’s also a culture of blame ‘Rana’s in a free society, holding onto a backward religion or culture etc.’ not understanding how dire the consequences could potentially be.

Yep. On top of how painful it is to simply watch Rana’s story, it becomes exponentially worse to see real people be so indifferent or even blame her (and all the people like her) for everything. This is why I’m not sure if it’s worth showing so much of her suffering. For what? Who? People aren’t going to get it. They can see all this, how conflicted and terrified and guilty she was through the whole thing and still think, she’s a cheater so whatever. Or why does she care about what her family thinks? Is the gap still too big to bridge? Or is Corrie not good enough at telling this story? Or are those the loud minority and other people are more contemplative about it? Who knows.
