the original had an episode where one of the sisters used magic to rape a man… and it was depicted as funny/cute that she spent the weekend having wild sex with a man who magically could not consent… anything is more feminist than that tbqh

not to hate on it; the time period has to be taken into account. but i think it’s allowable to call the current show a new feminist take

i just checked; it was “dream sorcerer” episode 1×05. my netflix was still stopped right there on that episode where i ragequit it for depicting it as “empowering” for women to use a spell to control men into having sex with them… ugh. 1990s fauxminism

Eww, yikes. I think I might have watched that ep but I don’t remember much of it now? But, like you said, taking the time period into account, I can understand how they felt they were doing as well as they could, going for that specific girl power kind of feminism, similar to Buffy and Xena. Maybe the execution was lacking sometimes but taking the era and the length of the show and what else they produced into account, I get that they might even be proud of being a feminist show to begin with.

But both sides can be right. The old crew can have been proud of what they did, and the new show can be feminist in a different way, and it is! Its approach may not necessarily be better, but it is focusing on it in a very deliberate plot-centric way. The first episode alone had #MeToo protests, it had specific language and discussions, their mom was the head of the Women’s Studies department, it is accurate to say that it is a new kind of feminist show. So I wish they’d all had a chance to come to an understanding before the fighting got worse.

The only production things I have heard about the show is the one actress who i can never call her names had a production credit on the original and was vocal about not wanting the reboot, even going as far as telling folks not to watch. The things going on now is the upset with not all 3 actresses being latinx.

Right, Holly Marie Combs was pretty unhappy about things and I get that fans kind of absorbed that, she put a face on what people loved about the show so people would naturally be upset if she was upset. Though that’s taking one person’s feelings pretty far, downvoting and boycotting and running campaigns. And if it’s about that, then people should say so, instead of focusing on the acting and writing.

It’s honestly just that. Nobody was particularly excited bc it’s the CW and then the new showrunners didn’t care to use the old show/actresses and one of the new actresses said something dumb and then HMC really showed her ass and basically asked people to boycott and it just snowballed. I mean, fandom doesn’t need a reason to be hateful and dogpile on something imagine when they’re being encouraged.

There’s an actual issue now bc two of the actresses aren’t latin but you now, most people only care bc now they have a valid reason to criticize.

I’m seeing the non-Latina actress news start to become bigger, but I totally agree with your last point, the people who hated it before are only bringing this in to their talking points to legitimize already existing hate, the downvoting and campaigning has been going on for much longer than this last week. There wasn’t a wellspring of support that suddenly changed after the news came out.

Tags5, and feel connected enough to the culture to feel a part of it, as for my own opinions on the non-latina actress news, but I get that it can be for others and it's definitely a legitimate issue, but my priority for the time being is on f/f, but not desi, caesir, charmed, eta: lol fun story about desi rep, he was played by christopher lee, I can actually access and understand desi media, it's not perfect of course and sometimes I feel like I don't really have footing in either world, mswyrr, not everyone has that, personally I've both never even really had expectations for good desi rep, replies, shaloved30, so was never even in a position to be disappointed by it, the biopic made about the literal founder of pakistan--like father of the country stuff, the lack of that in my life in any way is so much more stark, while also being in the privileged position of keeping a foot in both sides of my background, while I've always been more forgiving of POC playing POC roles it's never been a dealbreaker for me, who was a badass no doubt

Previous PostPrevious I don’t know the details but I’m pretty sure the Charmed reboot got a lot of negative attention before it aired because the reboot creators/rights owners screwed over the original show’s actresses who had put a lot of their own IP and work into it. I don’t know enough to have a solid opinion and I feel bad for the cast and crew involved in the reboot who didn’t do anything wrong, but there’s been a lot of unfair stuff going on production-wise unrelated to the quality of the show.

  • Hello! I would just like to tell you I absolutely love reading your commentary in the tags of your posts. I look forward to reading them on every gifset! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!
  • when i started watching star trek discovery, i thought at least michael a crush on prime philippa. then the narrative kept insisting their relationship with mother/daughter so i threw my hands in the air and said ig! and now when i watched that scene, i was all ??? this doesn’t read as platonic to me. it can’t be just me seeing things with my own two lesbian eyes (1/2)
  • First off, I admire your patience with your answers to all the asks, thank you for your thoughtful replies.I have seen lots of frustration and disappointment with the Maya/Carina storyline/airtime in s4 so far on Station 19 and I find it fascinating and strange at how quickly people are forgetting the covid pandemic isn’t just a storyline, it’s real life for everyone right now, including the cast and production team. (That’s a general observation – not one I’ve ever sensed you to have through your responses BTW). That we have had any onscreen, close physical contact nevermind actual physical intimacy that requires the actors to kiss etc is a huge luxury. I don’t know what the exact rules are for the acting industry in the USA at the moment, but in the UK the rules are still strict for actors and were even stricter earlier in the year (at around the time the episodes just broadcast would have been filmed). And just this week Tom Cruise has been widely (and positively) reported about for making sure that the severity of the risks are to the industry and how much effort is being put in by those that can have shows/films in production right now to keep the industry alive for when it hopefully gets a little bit easier. And yes, it’s frustrating to see our favourite story lines within ensemble shows get a ‘lesser’ spotlight than others, especially when the others are the heteronormative, ‘mainstream’ ones.We have no idea what plan A was for s4 – it’s a casualty of covid, twice over. First because the broader narrative was adjusted to accommodate it, almost like the introduction of an additional series member to the ensemble. And second because they have to come up with stories that can be told through scenes filmed in ways that the cast, crew, studio etc are prepared to do because they feel they can do them safely.COVID kills, still by the thousand, every hour and day now, 9+ months after the first lockdowns and shelter in place orders etc. So much of life is unrecognisable for so many because of it, because they have lost people they care about, jobs, homes… And things taken for granted 10 months ago are almost forgotten about, condemned to ancient history because they just can’t happen safely.Yet we have new episodes on TV, made by people who were prepared to hug and kiss and put themselves as elevated risk of catching a seriously scary disease because it was something they could do to help us all, collectively feel like life still goes on.(we could have ended s3 at episode 15 and still be waiting for s4 to start filming….yet we have French Toast that’s better than sex!) Personally, I’m just so glad that we have had Maya and Carina on screen again in 2020 and that the storyline has survived COVID in the real world. Yes, it would be great if it was more and different and all the things as fans we always want. And hopefully it will be nearer that by the end of s4’s whole arc. And if it isn’t? I think I’ll cross that bridge when it comes. Hopefully at a point in 2021 when COVID-19 is no longer a main cast member of our lives… On screen and and in real life.
