Serangoon Road – 1×02
life goals to be her
yasssssssss, shut it down girl.
I had never heard of this show, but Serangoon Road is a road in Singapore, so I got excited and Googled this show! It’s set in ’60s Singapore, which is cool! But as far as I can tell from the Youtube video & the IMDB page, it’s full of white people () and Chinese Singaporeans (who mostly don’t sound very Singaporean? Idk maybe cause the characters are accent-switching when they talk to white people, which I totally get). The only non-Chinese Singaporeans I saw were the Indian policeman and lots of Malay and Indian rioter extras. Woohoo yay.
So I don’t want to judge this show based of the few gifsets and a couple of videos that I’ve seen, but I’ve got a slightly bad feeling that once again, the version of my country that’s getting presented to the world looks limited at best. (Not as bad as POTC 3, THAT CHINESE MINI-WORLD IS NOT AND NEVER HAS BEEN SINGAPORE, but that’s not saying much.) And a ton of the people who watch it will never know that the Singapore they’re seeing isn’t quite like the Singapore that really existed.
At least it seems to have a cool female character in it?
Oh, that’s disappointing. I did go in, as with all media, assuming that it would be white male-centric and inaccurate, but I didn’t realize how much the dynamics with the local people were misrepresented. :
