Listen, I did not see that twist coming in Summerland lol I’m sure other viewers did, but not me! And when it happened, seeing Ava go through all of those emotions was an experience! I fucking loved it and thought “oh my god, how fucking convenient and unrealistic” But yes, finally something corny happens for us. More of this contrived make you feel mushy inside wlw films please!

I KNOW, Alice’s face when she saw the picture! I have that moment on my list to gif but I don’t even know if I can do it justice without the sound, the sheer incredulity and like, Gemma Arterton almost hyperventilating as she looked through the rest of the pictures. And omg, her face when she saw Vera and then Vera withFrank.

And yes, it was convenient and unrealistic and contrived, but that happens all the time in m/f movies! And it’s not even like it was a massive coincidence, Vera had actually spent a lot of effort actively coordinating this. In m/f movies, the climactic suspense comes from whether or not the person who’s more in doubt at that point will forgive the other person or choose to follow their heart instead of convenience or even if the timing will just work out, whatever it takes to show up. And that’s what Vera did! Show up! Like, yeah, it was a bit cheesy and unearned but it often is! We–by which I mean all viewers, wlw or not–are so used to f/f characters separating in historical pieces (even when the book says they stay together, TITTB??) that we’re almost judging it by a different standard, since it’s so out of the realm of normal for us. Not every movie has to be the best movie ever, it can just be watchable and enjoyable, and this super was.

Lol I’m so shocked that you watched Summerland. Booasaur watched a MOVIE??? In this economy??? It’s more likely than you think!

Haha, I did! I did see a movie!

I actually wasn’t going to! I download all these when they come out as a matter of course, but I’d been curious about the ending on this one. I can’t find the post now but it was something someone said here that seemed to imply the ending wasn’t as bad as we’d imagined, and then very recently reviews were coming out that were talking about this treacly twist, and the reviewers didn’t actually seem too happy about it but that actually means good news for us so my interest was piqued.

I skipped straight to the ending, and honestly, didn’t understand what exactly was happening because Frank seemed a pretty white kid so I wasn’t putting everything together but it all seemed so sweet and happy, I had to go back and watch to see how they got there. And I’m glad I did!

The way that Ava places her face on Bea’s neck

Oh, yeah! I was so focused on Bea during that, such a rule follower but still quietly defying Mother Superion enough to offer comfort to Ava, I wasn’t even really thinking about what that must have been like for Ava.

She turned into her so instinctively! Which doesn’t stand out until you remember she hasn’t touched anyone in years. She’s been touched by the orphanage nuns a bit but that’s quite different. She did hug Diego when she returned to visit, true, but that was a greeting, not seeking comfort like this. And like, not to go all Juliantina, but pressing her face into Bea’s neck for comfort, well. >_>

But really, it does say SO much that this person who has been so, so alone, and is suddenly battling so much, the weirdness of this all, being able to move and touch again, being out with people again, trying to balance being independent with not being so alone, and she’s still able to (correctly) identify that this quiet, restrained person will offer her solace. :’)

Watched Summerland, thought it was a cute movie. Not nearly long enough imo and I know people flocked to it for the Vera x Alice but I actually would’ve loved more Frank & Alice. They were super cute!

Yeah, I feel like they could have fit so much more in! Honestly, I would have been fine staying in this world for a lot longer, knowing the guarantee of that happy ending was coming.

Aww, more Frank and Alice? There was so much of them! But I can get wanting more, Frank was so sweet and just kept on breaking through Alice’s barriers. I actually really appreciated how much of the movie happened before she knew he was Vera’s son, although, obviously, that’s deliberate to literally be part of the whole story and happy ending, but you know, sometimes stories miss really simple tricks.

I WOULD have not minded some more scenes after Vera arrived, aside from sending the plane off, a bit more with the three of them. Even if it wasn’t anything super serious, like the inevitably awkward setting him down and explaining…so much. Or, omg, if in front of Frank Vera holds up THAT record and is like, oh, you still have this? Frank and Alice would have both thrown themselves into the ocean over that.

ALSO, I wouldn’t have minded more of Frank and Vera. Honestly, more of every permutation, please.

Hi there, how are you liking Perry Mason so far? I have been considering watching it because of Tatiana Maslany :)

Hey! Uh, well, originally I wasn’t too keen on it but it’s grown on me. It felt like that prestige TV hollowness papered over by style and sex and violence, too busy trying to be cool and mysterious to actually establish the characters, but either it’s started doing better with them or I’ve just gotten used to it, because I am liking it more now.

Whether or not I’d fully recommend it depends on if this upcoming season finale actually resolves this case and leaves people better off, or if it’ll be the typical bittersweet “life sucks, it’s deep to point that out” thing modern TV likes so much. TMas is great, but I wouldn’t watch it just for her unless you’re a huge fan.

I loved that scene with Della and Hamilton from the last episode of Perry Mason. It made me wonder weather they are actually engaged (for appearances’ sake) or Ham just likes to joke about it. Thoughts?

Hmm. I thought it was an off the cuff joke he was making, the way Della looked at him in reaction, kind of narrowing her eyes. I feel like if he WERE her fiance we’d have heard it mentioned by literally anybody else before this, Perry, Hazel, EB, even Hamilton to Perry, but I guess it could be a bearding arrangement they don’t talk much about. Oh, but another mark against it would be the huge conflict of interest it must be? At least for Barnes to cause some drama.

If this were a different show, one without all this history that it’s the origin story for, I would almost think it was foreshadowing an engagement precisely because of all the drama but it feels like a lavender marriage between existing characters Della Street and Hamilton Burger is a bit too far even for a 2020 reboot.

Oh so the publisher – 23 times – scene was not how they first met? Was that explained to the audience because I just watched it and I could only see glimpses of their past? Or did I miss it?

No, I think that’s how she tracked her down after, but the first time they met was what we saw that first flashback, at the concert. The 23 times would have been after they already had broken up and it wasn’t referenced at any other time, no. The timeline would have been:

Meeting at the concert -> other little flashbacks like in the car, by the lake, on the bed, and so on -> breaking up -> the 23 times search -> Vera sending Frank to Alice -> Vera going to Frank and Alice -> decades of happiness -> Vera finally telling Alice she looked for her in 23 different shops
