In espanol any time “ita” or “ito” is added to a word it’s to make it more endearing. Like I call my wife mi amorcito which literally translates to little love but it’s not meaning I only love her a little. Adding those is like putting more emphasis on how you feel in a way. Mijita is like just a little more love than mija. A lot of people will say mija to you even if you’re not their daughter but probably only really close people would say mijita.

yeah, he uses the ito/ita diminutive (flashback to the little brother discussion) which would be something like little friend but in this case he obviously means “that female friend you also kiss/special friend”. i think girl-friend plus the quotation marks does the job.
